  • Energy company Suncor suffered a cyber attack and its company Petro-Canada gas reported problems at its gas stations in Canada

Energy company Suncor suffered a cyber attack and its company Petro-Canada gas reported problems at its gas stations in Canada

Pierluigi Paganini June 26, 2023

The cyber attack suffered by Suncor Energy impacted payment operations at Petro-Canada gas stations in Canada.

Suncor Energy is Canada’s leading integrated energy company that provides oil sands development, production and upgrading, offshore oil and gas, and petroleum refining in Canada and the U.S.. It owns the Petro-Canada retail and wholesale distribution networks.

A cyber attack against Suncor Energy made the headlines because Petro-Canada gas stations across Canada have been reportedly impacted by technical problems.

Customers at the impacted gas stations were not able to pay with credit card rewards points. Suncor immediately launched an investigation into the incident with the help of third-party experts.

“Suncor (TSX: SU) (NYSE: SU) has experienced a cyber security incident. The company is taking measures and working with third-party experts to investigate and resolve the situation, and has notified appropriate authorities.” reads a statement released by the company. “At this time, we are not aware of any evidence that customer, supplier or employee data has been compromised or misused as a result of this situation.”

Petro-Canada

Suncor has yet to provide details about the attack, however, Petro-Canada reported problems with Petro-Points from its app and website.

Logging into Petro-Points from our app and website is temporarily unavailable. We're working hard to resolve the issue and apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks for your patience!
